Wayn OS: A Closer Look at the Operating System
Ahmed Mohamed Maawy
A note from our Chief Technology Officer
When we began designing the Wayn phone, the hardware was only half of the story.
The real question was: what should the operating system feel like if it was built to protect attention, respect privacy, and keep people—especially children—safe by default?
There was no need to reinvent the entire structure from scratch; there are open-source projects already proving that healthier digital ecosystems are possible. And among them, one stood out.
We chose to build on /e/OS — a privacy-focused, open-source operating system with a strong technical foundation and a philosophy aligned with ours.
The core foundation is already real — it lives inside our current prototype.
But the full vision requires more: deeper customisation of the OS, system-level features that go beyond what exists today, and the ability to build the multi-profile ecosystem and Essential Modes exactly as outlined in this article.
Here’s an dive into our OS and why it matters.
What is /e/OS?
e/OS is a de-Googled, open-source operating system built on Android, but without the surveillance, profiling, and data extraction that have become standard across the industry.
It offers:
A Google-free core
Strong privacy protection
Minimal background tracking
A clean, calm interface
Full compatibility with many Android apps
A strong community and active development cycle
In other words: it gives us the structure to build the operating system we believe people deserve.
The Core Philosophy
1. Open source at every step
No black boxes.
No hidden processes.
Anyone can inspect the system, improve it, or hold it accountable.
2. A safer environment than standard Android
System-level protections against harmful content—not just app-level filters.
This gives Wayn OS a stable, trustworthy base from which we can build the features that matter most to families, students, and anyone who wants a healthier relationship with technology.
3. A calmer UX/UI
Visual choices that reduce overstimulation:
less motion, softer contrast, fewer nudges, clearer hierarchy.
4. Privacy built in
No silent tracking.
No behavioural profiling.
No background analytics you never asked for.
Permissions are clear and human-readable.
A Safer App Store — Built on Open Source
We want people to know what they’re installing — and what they’re not.
The Wayn App Store builds on the open-source ecosystem but adds layers of intentional curation.
This means:
No harmful categories: pornography, gambling, explicit content
Clear permission labels
Privacy ratings
No dark-pattern installation flows
No hidden trackers
An OS That Grows With You
One of the most important decisions we made early was this:
The OS should adapt to the person, not force the person to adapt to the OS.
This became the foundation for our multi-profile system — different account modes designed for different stages of life and different types of use.
1. Kids Mode — The safest environment we can build
A child’s first connection to the digital world should be protected, predictable, and free from harmful exposure.
Essential Mode offers:
No access to harmful content — not even by accident
Curated, safety-first apps
System-level content filtering
No trackers
No ads
No algorithmic suggestions
Everything is intentional. Nothing slips through.
2. Teen Mode — More autonomy, still protected
As children grow, their world expands — but carefully.
Teen Mode introduces:
A broader range of apps
No access to social media apps, harmful or restricted categories
Safer search by default
It’s a step forward, not a leap.
3. Full Mode — Full capability without the chaos
For students, professionals, and anyone reclaiming their time, the Full Mode offers:
Clean, calm interface
Ability to switch to essential mode — core function minus the noise
All apps except those that conflict with Wwayn values (e.g., pornography, gambling)
It’s a device that supports focus, work, and life — without compromising what matters.
Essential Mode — When the Phone Steps Back
Essential Mode is not just a toggle. It’s an architectural layer of Wayn OS.
When activated:
The home screen reduces to the essentials
No feeds
No dopamine-loop apps
No unexpected distractions
No algorithmic behaviour
No content outside your control
Essential Mode is designed for:
studying
praying
sleeping
spending time with family
resting
being fully present
It is the most important expression of our OS philosophy:
technology that reduces friction instead of creating it.
Looking Ahead
Wayn OS will continue to evolve, always guided by the same principles: privacy, calm, safety, transparency, repairability, longevity, and a belief that technology should serve people, not the other way around.
To bring all of this to life, we’ll need support — engineering, partnerships, and contributors who share this direction and want to help shape an operating system designed with intention.
We’ll keep sharing our progress openly as Wayn OS grows, guided by feedback from the people who use it and the communities it’s built to protect.
